West bank highways need attention

We agree with Council President Terry Authement that a task force is needed to study the traffic problems along U. S. 90 in St. Charles Parish. It is a major thoroughfare that needs improvement.

Long advertised as the future Interstate 49, it has never even started to achieve that status here except in the through traffic it has attracted. So, in effect, we have a main street for business that is also serving traffic going to and from points beyond our borders. And the road that is serving those two purposes is not doing the job.

Perhaps a re-routing of some of the highway through the parish would be necessary to accomplish the two purposes. That could be the job of a task force to determine how and where.

The section of U. S. 90 between Raceland and Morgan City has already achieved interstate standards. And that has helped attract interstate traffic to our section of the route which is not up to such standards. Because of it, our local traffic is suffering.

St. Charles does not want to be off the map when it comes to major thoroughfares. With the business and industry we have here, we need a modern system of roads and highways.

Our east bank of the river already has local and interstate systems in place with I-10, Airline Highway and River Road. But our west bank needs some attention and it will take a task force to get it started.
