Baseball
Season update: In early March, the boys took the field in Denham Springs to compete in their elite baseball tourney. Overall, the boys had a record of 3-1 in the tournament, and had some excellent power plays.
Hot hands: “All of the guys had a good weekend and played hard,” says Coach Cade Rogers when interviewed. “And we had an excellent pitching staff.” I guess you can’t ask for more than that in a weekend full of foul plays and hard hits.
What needs work: Though having a seemingly sweet stretch of baseball, the boys found an inning that got them stuck in a rut, which in the words of Coach Rogers “made the difference from a 4-0 tournament record to a 3-1 record.” Staying away from the long innings ended up backfiring on the boys to ultimately result in their defeat. Better luck next time guys!
Up next: Another weekend full of baseball was in store for the HHS Tigers. This time, however, it will be hosted by yours truly at the Hahnville and Destrehan fields in the Gerard Oubre Memorial Tournament. Another big game coming up is the DHS vs. HHS game March 31 a t Destrehan fields.
Golf
Season update: The HHS golf team played a tough match against Vanderbilt and it fortunately ended in a victory for HHS, 159-155.
Hot hands: Big hitters of the match were Dayton Bordelon, Andrew Noto and Derek Bonvillon. All players had low scores to nail the match.
Sparkplug: Matt Jewel, junior, also played a good match against Vanderbilt opponent. “I was really proud of my team mates, but unfortunately I didn’t feel focused on my short game like I should have been,” says team- player Jewel.
What needs work: Golf, unlike many sports, is more of an independent game and deals with concentration and patience, which can always be improved on and off the course, though all the golfers showed expertise in their game.
Up next: The Tigers go up against St. Charles on Friday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m. at HHS Stadium.
Track
Season update: Big events are coming up for the HHS Track team, and that’s not just talking about what’s going on the track itself. On Friday, March 16 Hahnville hosted the Don Raymond Relays and had an outstanding turnout. Teams from all over attended the event but didn’t match up against our Tigers.
Hot hands: All athletes stood out in the match, but events that stole the scene were the high and long jumps, discus and shot-put. Katona James reported that she was confident going into the match, while others were controlling their nerves before events.
Sparkplug: The boys “ran like the wind” in their events and scored some major points for the team.
What needs work: All teams need to have the same attitude and desire to win. Heidi Burnam, senior, feels all players need to be focused on the big picture of winning state and district qualifying rounds, rather than other problems that may get in the way along the way.
As Farrah August said, “They don’t have anything on us,” the girls seem ready to take one the world.
Tennis
Season update: This week, due to a cancellation in games prior in district, was a time to brush up on some rusty edges in both the Hahnville and Destrehan’s tennis games. Teams took up a scrimmage in order for both teams to have a practice match and get each player some extra time on the court.
Destrehan defeated both of the Tiger teams, but the wins were not counted as district standings, just extra bragging rights until official play begins. The district match will be held on March 29 at Destrehan.
Softball
Season update: After playing seven games in a five-day stretch, the Lady Tigers have come away with a 6-0-1 record. The Lady Tigers played teams from all over – East St. John, Destrehan, West Jeff, Chapelle, and the last game against Morgan City that ended their winning streak on March 10.
Hot hands: Senior and pitcher, Chelsey Flores 16, had all-time excellent pitching stats. Coach Gerorge Bode feels that she showed great leadership abilities as well as performance on the mound.
Sparkplug: Gina Sierra, senior, was the lead off hitter during games and her hard work at practice paid off with her smooth swing and driveline hits.
What needs work: “The coaches challenged the girls to play to their potential level,” says Coach Bode. “And the girls responded by playing better than we could have imagined.” With a previous record of 1-5 before their seven game stretch.
Up next: The Lady Tigers hit the field tonight against St. Charles at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
