Covington holds off Destrehan late to seal win in opening round series

Jayse DeGruy of Destrehan

Facing elimination Saturday, Destrehan battled to its final at bat, but a five-run fifth inning by host Covington proved the difference as the Wildcats fell 6-5 in game two of a best of 3 opening round series in the Division I non-select playoffs.

No. 12 Covington advanced to round two, where it will face No. 12 St. Amant. The Lions won 4-0 over Destrehan on Friday in the first game of the series.

Destrehan (18-15) led 2-1 after four innings on Saturday, but Covington’s Keith Aymami’s two-run single in the fifth highlighted a five-run frame as the Lions took a 6-2 lead. Destrehan scored three unanswered runs to pull within one, but could not tie things up.

Jayse DeGruy led Destrehan offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Jonah Haslauer and Chase Marcotte also drove in runs.

Bradley Miller earned the win on the mound for Covington, going six innings and allowing five runs on five hits while striking out three. DeGruy took the loss for Destrehan.

Aymami went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Jared Heck went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Covington (25- 8) offense.
