T-shirt fundraiser honors teacher’s years of service

A T-shirt fundraiser benefitting the Kellie Fletcher Growl Scholarship Fund will close this week, and organizer Dana Dufrene said she hopes sales will bolster the memory fund of her friend.

Dufrene’s life was filled with moments of service with Kellie Growl. The two friends connected nearly a decade ago through commonalities like running, teaching and their deep faith, and Dufrene said she will never stop fighting to keep her sweet friend’s memory alive.

“She just was unforgettable … just such a remarkable person,” Dufrene said of Growl.

Growl, a native of Kenner and resident of Luling, died last year at 40 years old. She was a teacher for 17 years in the St. Charles Parish School System, with most of her teaching years were at Luling Elementary.

After Growl’s death Dufrene organized a blood drive in Growl’s memory, and Growl’s parents Kerry and Kathy Fletcher started the Kellie Fletcher Growl Scholarship Fund.

Kendra Carver helps to facilitate Luling Elementary School’s running club. The group was a passion of Growl’s.

“This year we will have completed three 5K races, with the last race being on April 24,” Carver said. “The last race is our Live Like Kellie Race … in memory of Growl. Kellie was a mentor of the LES running club for six years. Her positive attitude, big heart and dedication to our students left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Every day we should all live like Kellie.”

T-shirt sales are open to the public, and a blood drive is being organized in memory of Growl on May 27 at Holy Family Church in Luling from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To purchase a shirt, Venmo Dufrene @Dana-Dufrene. Shirts are $20 a piece, and purchasers are asked to put their shirt size in Venmo’s comment section. Shirts are available through April 12 in the following sizes: adult small, adult medium, adult large, and adult xl, xxxl, and xxxl.
