Lakewood Elementary School to host school’s first Gator Gala

Lakewood Elementary School’s music department – the largest elementary music department of St. Charles Parish Public Schools – is gearing up to host its first music gala at Grand Ridge Country Club later this month.

The effort is being organized by Lakewood band director Monica Monti and choir director Brian Martinez.

“We were sitting down planning our year out at the beginning of the school year and really needed a fundraiser,” Monti said, adding that fundraising efforts have been non-existent for the past few years because of COVID and Hurricane Ida. “We were spit balling ideas and I said, ‘What if we have a party? What if we do a gala and have sponsors and it would be something fun for everybody?’”

The idea took shape, and ticket sales are now open for the April 29 event.

“Everyone that I have talked to has been excited about it,” Monti said. “We need to upgrade and get new instruments. When I got here in 2014 we had about 70 kids in band and now we’re at over 200.”

Monti said the funds raised will also help the band attend more competitions and buy more equipment needed for the music classroom.

“We try to keep it the band and choir affordable for any student who is interested to be able to participate,” she said. “We’re looking forward to a fun night and to raise some money for our kids.”

Several local businesses have hopped on board as sponsors, Monti said, including The Will Dempsey Band, Theresa Elizabeth Photography, Quillen Construction, United Rentals, Quality Wholesale, GL Realty, Katina Summers with Edward Jones, and Thompson’s Seafood.

The 2023 Gator Gala will be held April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Grand Ridge Country Club. Patrons are in for a night of entertainment by Will Dempsey, performances by current and former musicians of Lakewood, music by DJ Quinn with Impulse Entertainment, raffles, family photography, and the chance to bid on a slew of silent auction items.

Tickets are $50 per adult and can be purchased through order form at Lakewood Elementary School. Pre-sale raffle tickets for themed baskets are available as well.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Lakewood Elementary Music Department. Cocktail attire is requested.
