“Bark at the Park” event draws a crowd

Pets and owners have a day to play together

The first Bark at the Bridge Park event by St. Charles Parish Animal Control took place on Dec. 22 after having to be rescheduled due to rain earlier this month.

Over 300 people attended the event, which was aimed at raising money and awareness for a new animal shelter that will be built in St. Charles Parish. People interested in adopting pets could also bring their current pets to meet potential new ones.

Over $2,100 was raised and a few animals were adopted during the event.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office also did a K-9 demonstration and there were about eight booths set up with different pet-related businesses.

“It was a lot of fun. It was something different because we’ve never had something like this here,” said Leonie Agurcia with Animal Control.

Animal Control Director Angie Robert said that there is a great need for a new shelter in the area.

“We need another shelter because we’re growing out of this one,” Robert said of the parish’s current animal shelter. While Robert said that every dollar raised will help build the shelter, the main goal of the event was to let the public know of the need for one.

Robert said that Animal Control plans to hold this event annually.

“I have high hopes that (this event) will be much bigger next year,” she said.
