The St. Charles Parish Library will celebrate the end of its summer reading program with sno-balls, games, crafts and other activities at its annual Sno-Ball Social Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the East Regional Library. The event is free and open to the public.
Maria Bilello, adult programming and outreach librarian, said this year’s social will include “second-chance crafts,” giving patrons another opportunity to complete crafts offered during library programs throughout the summer.
The event will also feature a bubble station and a video game truck from NOLA Games on Wheels. Brooke’s Sno-World will hand out free sno-balls sponsored by the Friends of St. Charles Library. The River Region Master Gardeners will also participate in the event.
More than 2,300 residents registered for this year’s “Plant A Seed, Read” summer reading challenge, and participants have logged more than 1.84 million reading minutes so far this summer.
“We’d love to have every child, teen, and adult in the parish participate, so our goal is to grow the challenge every year,” Bilello said.
The Sno-Ball Social also gives the library an opportunity to encourage participants to log their remaining reading minutes in Beanstack, the library’s tracking app. The challenge ends July 31.
“All summer we’ve had themed programs and events, but the reading challenge connects us to our mission to promote literacy for patrons of all ages,” Bilello said.
Patrons of all ages who joined the summer reading challenge earned a sign-up prize and can earn a completion prize by reading and logging 360 minutes by July 31. Prizes will be available for pickup at the Sno-Ball Social for participants who have not yet received them.
The event will take place rain or shine.
As summer programming comes to an end, the library will continue offering monthly programs for children, teens and adults at its branches. Library programs are free and do not require a library card to attend.
