The St. Charles Parish Library System is planning for a new Hahnville branch, and local residents are invited to provide their feedback now through the end of the month on what they would like to see in the new building.
Library Assistant Director Lauren Campo Pitz said a survey – available at www.myscpl.org – will help to guide future discussions on what the new branch will include. The survey includes questions on how important certain library features – like a separate teen space, a separate children’s space, outdoor seating, and study rooms – are to patrons.
“We’re all excited about a new Hahnville branch and the impact it can have for the community,” she said. “The results of this survey and talking to our patrons will show us what people are already using the library for and what they’d like to see in a new library. The size and location of our current Hahnville branch has some limitations, so we know that a new building will give us many more possibilities to live our library’s mission, which is to empower our community to explore, learn, create, and connect.”
Pitz said the survey will be open until the end of the month. The current Hahnville branch of the library system, located at 14996 River Road, is open. Pitz said the location did not incur a lot of damage from Hurricane Ida, but that it is the last branch of the system’s properties to undergo a location change or major renovation – the last of which was when the new Norco branch on Apple Street was opened in 2019.
“The new location has been purchased,” Pitz said of the Hahnville branch. “It’s the old district attorney’s location … near Family Dollar. It’s actually very close to the current location, but the property is much larger. We would like to keep a lot of outdoor space there. We’re close to the levee.”
The building that was on the property has been knocked down, Pitz added.
“It’s always exciting to be starting from scratch and thinking about what we could do,” she said.
There is no timeline yet for the start of construction or completion of the project.
