Hahnville has had Destrehan’s number in volleyball for the past few seasons, but on Tuesday night, the Wildcats put their improvement on display by downing their archrivals three games to one, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-17. The Tigers led the match 1-0 after a back-and-forth opening set, but Destrehan regrouped to string together three wins in a row to close the match. The Wildcats took full control of the final game from the start, leading 17-3 at one point before a late Tigers rally.
Isabelle Chaisson had 10 kills for Destrehan. Claire Dantin had nine kills and Gia Zeringue and Jaz’myn Lewis each had seven. Korinne Kimble had 17 digs, while Noelle Kelley and Mallory Laumann each had 15. Allie Carmichael posted 25 assists.
“It’s amazing,” said Lewis, a senior. “They’re a really good team that’s been winning last few years. They’re our rivals, and it’s the best feeling ever. We stayed pumped up, came together as a team and everyone had great spirit.”
After a rebuilding season last year under coaches Edward Borgstede and Meghan Stock, the Wildcats have eyed making a big leap this season to contend for a district championship. After besting last season’s district champions in Hahnville, Destrehan now sits at a 4-0 district mark and 11-9 overall.
“We gave up some points, but as long as we’re being aggressive, I’ll take that,” said Borgstede, now in his second season with the team. “We did real well as far as being aggressive. It’s a big win for sure. I think it’s been awhile (since Destrehan beat Hahnville). We scrambled well and got them out of system, and I think our conditioning really played a big part at the end.”
Lewis said there may have been some jitters for the Wildcats in the first game, but the players talked about eliminating errors and mental mistakes and things clicked from there.
“We were just in the moment,” she said of the final game. “We knew we were up 2-1 and if we got the lead, we had to continue to play because they’re a good team and they’re going to fight back.
“It’s a great feeling … I’m glad to play with these ladies and to be part of this team.”
