Mardi Gras on the water

455 athletes compete in more than 1,300 events

Seven swim clubs took part in the Sun Villa Invitational last week, and were treated to a Mardi Gras-style event filled with food, games and fun.

Sun Villa finished fifth overall at the invitational after racking up 4,380 points. The Larayou Barracudas captured first place, while the Hill Heights Hurricanes came in second and the La Vacherie Gators finished third.

Overall, there were 455 competitors and over 1,300 swimming events.

Sun Villa did have two individual winners in the invitational.

Jesse LeBoeuf finished fourth in the 9-10 age group, while Brieanne Perry tied for second place in the 11-12 girls age group.

All swimmers had to make it through two rounds of qualifying before getting to swim in the finals on Sunday.

While swimming took center stage at the event, the surroundings resembled a festival more than a meet.

The Sun Villa Invitational had a Mardi Gras theme this year, which a New Orleans theme that had never been chosen before, according to Doreen Landry, a Sun Villa spokesperson.

There was also snowballs, plenty of food and games for the kids to play while they weren’t competing.

“It was a lot of fun,” Landry said. “The food was all cooked locally by Sun Villa parents and it was delicious.”
