Hahnville locks up district title with impressive win

The Hahnville Tigers won their first outright district title since 2004 in impressive fashion by dominating East St. John on both sides of the ball for a 41-21 win. Meanwhile, Destrehan won in a 34-33 thriller to lock up a playoff spot.

Though the Tigers started the game red hot, so did the Wildcats, who scored on their first possession by relying on a heavy dose of Dhaquille Williams. However, Hahnville was able to regroup quickly, and would score on their next five possessions to jump on top 35-7.

Running back Alfred Blue rumbled 46 yards to give the Tigers their first score, and then Brian Ensminger connected with James Butler to quickly put Hahnville on top 14-7. Minutes later, fullback Lloyd Richard would fly down the right sideline for a 37-yard score with 5:16 left in the first.

The Tigers ended the quarter with a 4-yard run by Blue to head into the second with a 28-7 lead.

A little over a minute into the second quarter, Ensminger would hit Blue on a 33-yard pass down the middle of the field for another score, but this time, East St. John answered with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Kalen Henderson to Williams to cut into the lead.

The Wildcats would get on the board again after Hahnville fumbled the kickoff to start the third, but Blue would put them away for good with a 17-yard touchdown run with 9:03 left in the third that made it 42-21.

While the offense had a big night, it was the Tiger defense that was responsible for the victory. East St. John entered the game with one of the most high-powered offenses in the state. But the Tigers got pressure on Henderson all night, with Ben Taylor, Jared Harrell and Linzell Rhodes all recording numerous sacks.

Destrehan 34 St. Amant 33

Meanwhile, Destrehan trailed 33-24 with 6:57 remaining in the game, but the Wildcats scored 10 straight points to pull out a thrilling 34-33 victory.

The teams were tied at 17-17 at the half, but Taylor Jones 4-yard run gave St. Amant a 9 point lead last in the fourth.

That’s when Henry Lenox took over.

The senior back tore down the left sideline for an 80-yard touchdown to bring the Wildcats to within two at 33-31. Shortly after, Andrew Wyatt’s field goal was still partially blocked but still made it through the uprights for the Destrehan win.

Lenox finished with 108 yards on 11 carries, while quarterback Taylor Dunn finished 14-for-28 with 211 yards and two interceptions.
