Hahnville heats up on cold night, picks up first district win

On one of the coldest nights of the year, with the wind-chill factor in the teens, the Hahnville varsity soccer team played East St. John and defeated the Wildcats 1-0.

The only score of the night came off the foot of Bryan Stewart, at the 16:20 mark in the first half. Stewart was set-up by a long kick at midfield by  Daniel Binet.

Stewart broke free and raced by two Wildcat defenders.  The goalie came out to cut the angle down and Stewart pushed the ball past him on one move.

The ball found the back of the net and the Tigers led 1-0.

Good defensive play by Anthony Lacassio, Chris Berry,  Michael Aucoin, Hunter McDonald, and other Tigers kept East St. John from scoring the rest of the night.

Goalie Jatin Patel had additional defensive help from Ryan Reyes, Brody Samaha, and  Mason Boyer.

Stewart just missed scoring his second goal for the Tigers with 12 minutes left in the contest, when Lamar James setup a give and go. However, the ball went wide by inches.

The win improved the Tigers’ District 6 record to 1-3, while the loss dropped East St. John to 1-3.

In the first half, the Tigers had nine shots on goal, scoring one, and East St. John had five.

In the second half, the Tigers had eight to the Wildcats 10.

“It feels good winning our first district game,” Hahnville head coach Garett Baham said. “East St. John defeated Destrehan 4-3 and gives us hope in district play.”

The Tigers wrapped up the first round of district play by traveling to Gonzales to play the East Ascension Spartans on Jan. 12.

The second round of district play will start on Friday, Jan. 15 when the Tigers take on Dutchtown at home at 7:30 p.m.
