The Destrehan Wildcats suffered their second-straight defeat with last week’s 38-24 loss to Edna Karr, and they are ready to start another win streak when they take on John Ehret (1-2) on Friday night.
Though the team has struggled over the last two weeks against Thibodaux and Karr, head coach Stephen Robicheaux is convinced that his squad is getting better each game – they just have to eliminate the mistakes.
“I thought we did some good things and we played better last week,” Robicheaux said. “We had some bright spots, like being able to run the football and Taylor (Dunn) making some good passes. We just need to eliminate mistakes such as turnovers, interceptions and dropped passes.
“We aren’t hitting the panic button yet.”
Looking at Destrehan’s schedule, it’s easy to see how a team with several new starters has managed to fall twice already. Robicheaux said that the previous 30-game win streak, while a great achievement, made it tough to schedule opponents this year.
“We were fortunate to go 30-0, but we had trouble finding a team that wanted to play us,” he said. “I knew that Karr and Thibodaux were going to be tough, because this is supposed to be both teams’ year, but that’s how the schedule worked out.”
Compounding the problem of such a tough schedule was that the Wildcats had to play their first two games without senior running back Henry Lennox. Lennox finally returned last week, but junior running Marshall Charles was injured right before the half against Karr.
“We were close going into the third, but losing Marshall was tough,” Robicheaux said.
As of Tuesday, Charles had one test done on his knee that ruled out a torn MCL. They are still waiting on test results on his ACL.
Without Charles, Destrehan should still be able to handle John Ehret, who was blown out by Hahnville 42-0. The Tigers scored all of their points before halftime. Ehret then regrouped to top South Plaquemines 18-13, but suffered another loss last week to Slidell, 31-21.
Ehret, which runs a similar style of offense to Destrehan, likes to throw the ball around the field with quarterbacks Curtis Ashford and Mike Alexander. Their favorite target so far this season has been Anthony Garrison.
“They throw the ball a lot and they have a running back that they run out as receiver,” Robicheaux said. “We are going to have to dominate their offensive line and get pressure on the quarterback.”
Defensively, Ehret plays man coverage and likes to blitz on almost every play.
“They have a good noseguard and they are athletic in the secondary, which could both give us some problems,” Robicheaux added.
