Destrehan makes it look easy in 9-1 victory

Sam Carriere jacked a home run in the first at bat for Destrehan and the Wildcats never looked back as they cruised to a 9-1 win over John Ehret in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Destrehan ace Kurt McCune pitched a complete game and allowed only five hits while striking out seven. Curtis Ashford suffered the loss for the Patriots.

After Carriere gave the Wildcats an early lead, Destrehan extended it in the second after Zach Schexnaydre hit a shot to right field, Brett Hebert walked and Seth Montz lined the ball to left to load the bases. With two outs, Dylan Lucich drew a walk to bring in another run.

A Patriot error and a triple by Matt Smith put the Wildcats on top 4-1 in the fourth, and the Wildcats scored three more runs in the fifth inning to blow the game open.

Scott Stonestreet drew a walk to lead off the fifth, then advanced to second on a bad throw by Patriot catcher Mike Alexander. Ashford managed to strike out Devin Damare, but Schexnaydre singled to put runners on the corners. A balk by Ashford then brought Stonestreet across the plate, and Montz doubled to right field to bring home another run.

A single by Carriere scored the final run of the inning and put the Wildcats up 7-1.

Destrehan scored the final runs of the game in the sixth. Matt Smith drew a walk to open up the Wildcats’ half off the inning, and McCune singled to put Smith in scoring position.

Cameron Quigley then grounded to third, but the third basemen threw home too late to get Smith. A Hebert walk later in the frame put the Wildcats up 9-1.

The Wildcats will now host Central-Baton Rouge Monday, May 10, in the regional round. Central edged St. Paul, 6-5, in another bi-district game.
