Destrehan looks to rebound against powerful Karr offense

Destrehan’s 30-game win streak may have ended with last week’s 31-21 loss to Thibodaux, but Wildcat head coach Stephen Robicheaux said that won’t have any affect on his squad for the rest of the season. “Going 30-0 meant we were a really good football team for two years and it was a testament to the players and coaches we had at that time,” he said. “It wasn’t a motivating factor for us and we knew it would come to an end eventually.

“Still, we can be a good football team this season if we continue to get better.”

Though Destrehan struggled offensively at times last week, the wet field conditions didn’t help matters – especially in the turnover department. Junior quarterback Taylor Dunn finished 8-of-24 on the night for 212 yards and three big touchdowns. However, Dunn threw three interceptions.

Robicheaux said that he would have liked to run the ball more but junior tailback Marhsall Charles, who was on the field for a majority of the snaps due to Henry Lennox’s injury, got tired in the second half.

“I think the wet field did have something to do with the turnovers and we would have liked to run the ball more and not go to the air as much because of the slippery conditions,” he said. “But that’s no excuse for the loss, because Thibodaux played on the same field. You can’t have turnovers and expect to beat a good team like Thibodaux.”

Still though, Robicheaux thought his team played better defensively against the Tigers than they did in their opening-season win against Helen Cox.

“They played well in the second half and stopped them on three straight drives,” Robicheaux said. “We just couldn’t get much done offensively and our defense was on the field a lot during the game.”

That’s something the defense can’t afford to do against Karr this Friday.

Karr is 2-0 on the season so far with victories over St. Paul’s and Higgins. Quarterback Munchie Legaux leads a high-powered offensive attack that goes to the air frequently.

In Karr’s first game, Legaux threw for 233 yards and four touchdowns. In their second game, he tossed one touchdown and recorded 180 yards on a muddy field.

“Offensively, Karr has a huge offensive line that averages around 6’4, 270 and they have a good running back, a good quarterback and a great group of receivers,” Robicheaux said. “We have played them in the past, but their coaches have done a really good job of bringing their offense along. They have all of the pieces in place and they are a really good football team.”

Defensively, Robicheaux said that Karr is big and fast up front, has a talented linebacker in Minnesota commitment Dwayne Mitchell, and a lock-down secondary.

“They might have more overall talent on both sides of the ball than any team we play this season,” he added.

But while it will be a challenge, Robicheaux said that his team is capable of bouncing back from last week’s loss.

“I’m optimistic about this football team,” he said. “We just have to work on getting better every game.”
