In spite of some turbulence in Egypt and a few other locales, there seems to be a sense of calm in most places. There are many indications that an attitude of peace on earth, goodwill toward men may be taking hold on the world as a hope for the future.
There’s some, not many, good international news items to welcome in the Christmas season this year. End of U. S. presence in Iraq is one of them with the last of our occupying soldiers heading home for the holidays.
Pres. George W. Bush sent them there when Saddam Hussein was causing a major deterrence to the establishment of peaceful existence and the creation of democracy and liberty in the mid-east. His role as a dictator also encouraged terrorism. Many citizens criticized Bush for starting the war, including current Pres. Barrack Obama who lately has been praising the work of our soldiers there.
The death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il offers hope that a new leader may emerge that will bring more freedom and democracy to people of the north Asian country.
Though his son Kim Jong Un is expected to run the communist country in the future, there is hope that our President can put forth feelers of friendship that will change the country’s unfriendly attitude to the rest of the world.
Also, some major inroads are being made into restoring friendly relations with Cuba. The doors are slowly being re-opened by universities such as Tulane in establishing programs there.
We pray that this is a sign of things to come. A relatively peaceful world is necessary to set the stage for rehabilitation of our earthly paradise.
