Hahnville High School alumnus Channing Canada has officially earned his way into the NFL – defying the odds, in many ways, to do so.
Canada made the 53-man roster of the New England Patriots this week, that status becoming official after the NFL’s final preseason cutdown day on Sunday. Canada went undrafted in April’s NFL Draft and signed with the reigning AFC Champions a few weeks later as a free agent. A very strong offseason with the Patriots left the coaching staff impressed, and Canada will be part of what has traditionally been a very strong defensive backs group in New England.
Canada was unranked as a prospect when his time with the Tigers came to an end after his senior season in 2019. The 6’1 cornerback signed with Trinity Valley Community College, and he rapidly began turning heads.
He worked his way to becoming the country’s top-ranked junior college cornerback and the No. 3 overall JUCO recruit while at Trinity Valley. He made 21 tackles and logged four passes defensed in his final season, then made the decision to sign with Texas Christian – Canada was officially on to play Big 12 football.
Canada earned First Team Academic All-Big 12 honors in his first season with the Horned Frogs in 2023. He played in all 12 of his team’s games and made his first career start in the season’s final game at Oklahoma, where he made three tackles against the Sooners. He made 20 tackles on the season, 14 of those solo, and recorded his first career sack in a 34-17 win over SMU.
His junior year in 2024 saw his playing time ramp up and he finished the season as a starter in the team’s final five games while playing in all 13. He intercepted a pass against Cincinnati in his team’s regular season finale, a 20-13 win. In a 49-28 win over Arizona, Canada made a season-high five tackles. He would match that effort in wins over both Kansas and Utah. TCU went 9-4, capped by a dominant New Mexico Bowl victory over ULL in December, 34-3.
Canada started every game as a senior in 2025 and made 30 tackles, 22 solo. He helped TCU go 9-4 with a 30-27 overtime Alamo Bowl victory over No. 16 USC in December. TCU also defeated No. 23 Houston, 17-14, in November.
Upon arriving in New England, the Boutte native showed he could make a positive impact on special teams as well as in the secondary, including time as both a kick returner and a gunner on punt coverage. He was one of three undrafted rookies to make the New England 53-man roster.
