Bill of Rights ensures our freedom

Sometimes we forget about how our great nation was formed and still stands relatively undisturbed in providing the freedoms we enjoy.

Dec. 15 is known as Bill of Rights Day. It is a reminder to reflect back on how our forefathers helped insure freedom and safety for our people by including 10 amendments to our Constitution.

After the Constitution was written, the House of Representatives approved 17 amendments to it. Of them, the Senate approved 12. Those 12 were sent to the states for approval in August of 1789. Ten of them were finally approved or ratified. Virginia’s legislature became the last to ratify them on December 15, 1791.

Readers are requested to spend some time today in reading the Bill of Rights (which is printed elsewhere on this page) and renew their familiarity with the document that has provided our people their freedom these many years.
