John Leslie “Mat” Matherne

John Leslie “Mat” Matherne passed away peacefully on August 6, 2021, due to diabetes and end-stage renal disease.

A true gentle giant at 6’6”, he would always greet you with a smile and a joke. His friendliness knew no bounds, and the phrase “never met a stranger” has never been more fitting. He was a lifelong resident of Norco, Louisiana, and he retired from Shell Oil Refinery where he also served as a first responder. He was also a volunteer fireman for many years and a firefighting trainer at Texas A&M. In his later years, he was a sought-after Santa Claus who brought happiness and cheer to many people, young and old.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; his children Frank Matherne (Fabiola), Rachelle Matherne (Michael), and Erin Matherne; siblings Laura Ditta, David Matherne, Judy Sharp (Kenneth Wayne), and Thomas “T.J.” LeBreton, Jr. (Debra); step-children Jennifer Golemi (Christian) and Jonathan Millet (Aimee); and eight grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Evelyn Matherne and his sister Linda Hohman. Memorial service will be held on Friday, August 20, 2021, from noon until 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Norco, 626 5th Street, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Face masks are required due to COVID-19. Private interment to be held later. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Norco Area Volunteer Fire Department by contacting President Brandon Smith at 985-788-1494.
