Water systems get needed upgrades

The St. Charles Parish Council recently approved contracts with three firms to cover engineering for projects set to improve the parish’s ability to clarify, store and distribute water.

A water line along Evangeline Road in Montz is set for an upgrade in the near future, as Civil and Environmental Consulting Engineers draw up plans to replace about 5,000 feet of existing 4-inch and 6-inch water mains with an 8-inch PVC water main. The project will also include the installation of approximately nine new fire hydrants, five water valves and 100 water meters.

Construction will be partially funded by a Community Water Enrichment Fund Grant in the amount of $135,714, with total construction costs estimated at $242,000. The project will help improve water flows and pressure in Montz, located on the Western side of the Bonnet Carre Spillway between the Mississippi River and Hwy. 61.

Another project, being designed by Shread-Kuyrkendall & Associates Inc., will place a 1-million-gallon glass-infused steel or concrete storage tank near the existing waterworks facility located on Milling Avenue in Luling. The tank will tie in to the existing water treatment facility on site. Engineering costs are being funded through a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement with the State Office of Facility Planning and Control in the amount of $175,000.

A third project will enhance the parish’s production of potable water by refurbishing an existing water clarifier that serves as the workhorse of water production for the East Bank. Jordan, Jones & Goulding Consulting Engineer will draw up plans to refurbish the East Bank C Plant Water Clarifier, which produces 4 million gallons of water per day. Engineering is being funded through a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement with the State Office of Facility Planning and Control as well, in the amount of $140,000.
