St. Charles Parish sheriff’s deputies have arrested a St. Rose man for taking part in an attempted burglary that led to another suspect being killed by the homeowner.
Aaron J. Vinnett, 20, of 525 Turtle Creek Lane, has been charged with attempted aggravated burglary and second-degree murder during a crime.
Vinnett was arrested after the Sheriff’s Office received information that he had an injury consistent with a gunshot wound, according to spokesman Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange.
Authorities say Vinnett was with Michael Cockerham, 21, who kicked in the rear door of a residence located in the 300 block of First Street in St. Rose at around 1 a.m.
Cockerham allegedly shined a laser light from a handgun through the doorway, which caused the homeowner, Tyrone Taylor, to fire at the door with a shotgun.
Cockerham was later found in the yard of Taylor’s neighbor with a gunshot to his abdomen. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
LaGrange said that Vinnett, who was standing near Cockerham when the two kicked in the door, was struck by shotgun pellets and received a small puncture wound in the middle of his chest.
Vinnett has been charged with second-degree murder in Cockerham’s death because he was attempting to burglarize a home when the homicide occurred.
