School district to utilize emergency feeding plan, supply home learning resources during closures

The St. Charles Parish Public School district will implement an emergency feeding plan providing free breakfast and lunch meals for students up to the age of 18 and will provide several online and printed resources for at-home learning, as per an update released by the district on further measures taken due to COVID-19/coronavirus.

Among other measures noted, Kindergarten registration will be rescheduled, while all previously scheduled school district events will not take place during the state-mandated closure of schools, which extends until April 13. All middle and high school athletic events have also been suspended until further notice.

The district’s full release read as follows:

As we navigate through this challenging period, we are committed to informing you of what the school system is doing to assist families. We are doing our very best to make decisions that will help care for our students, staff and families during this school closure. We will continue to update you throughout this process as information becomes available and appreciate your patience and understanding.

Parent Facility Access- Reminder

School administrators will be on campus between 8 AM and 4 PM on Monday, March 16 to allow parents access to any items they may need to retrieve from their child’s school, including medication.

Grab-and-Go Meals – New info

We are executing an emergency feeding plan for our students to ensure that they do not experience a lapse in food security. The emergency feeding plan will provide free breakfast and lunch meals for students up to age 18. Meal service will begin on Tuesday, March 17 through Thursday, April 9 each weekday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Meals will be served at these 5 designated sites:

St. Rose Elementary
Harry Hurst Middle
Luling Elementary
R.K. Smith Middle
R.J. Vial Elementary

Meals will be served via pick-up or curbside at each site at the designated location. Meals provided will be based on the number of children present at the time of pick-up. An ID is not required to pick-up meals.

At-Home Learning- New info

The District is preparing online and printed resources for at-home learning. Once completed, printed resources will be available for pick-up at designated schools and the School Board Office. These resources will assist in providing student learning opportunities. While these opportunities are not required and will not be graded, they are highly recommended to sustain current skill levels. Additionally, other home learning opportunities will soon be posted to our district webpage, www.stcharles.k12.la.us, using Google Classroom.

School Calendar

Decisions relative to the modification of our school calendar, including those related to Spring/Easter Break, have not been made. As we receive additional guidance and information from the Louisiana Department of Education, we will make appropriate decisions and update you. Any decision made will be based on what is in the best interest of our students.

SCPPS School and District Events Status

All previously scheduled school and district events and activities will not take place during the mandated closure which currently runs until April 13. As of now, the March 25 School Board Meeting will still be held. As we receive additional information from state and government officials relative to the reopening of schools, events will be rescheduled as appropriate.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration will be rescheduled upon return to normal school system operations.

Athletics

All middle and high school athletic competitions and practices are postponed until further notice.
