Hahnville kicked off District 6-I play in a big way last week with wins over Central Lafourche and Thibodaux, a strong start for a Lady Tigers team looking to make it five district volleyball championships in a row.
Both matches were sweeps for the Tigers. HHS earned a 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 win on the road over Central Lafourche. Its win over Thibodaux came in the Tigers’ home gym, 25-17, 25-18, 25-16.
Central played Hahnville tough, especially in the opening and closing sets. Hahnville head volleyball coach Mendi LeBoeuf said the Tigers regrouped in the clinching set after a relatively poor start.
“Midway through the set, I think we had gotten a little bit sloppy in terms of passing,” LeBoeuf said. “I was really pleased that we were able to turn that around and come back with much better ball control. We executed our offense well from there and closed it out.”
Madyn Romero shined defensively with 19 digs for Hahnville.
Against Thibodaux, Maci Hollingsworth had a stellar game to lead the way. The senior outside hitter made a game-high 22 kills while committing no hitting errors. Alania Thompson made nine kills with just one error on a strong night at the net for the Tigers.
“I thought we took care of the ball. We didn’t make a lot of unforced errors and that allowed us to stay ahead of things,” LeBoeuf said.
Hahnville took the court Friday and Saturday for some non-district play at the Newman Invitational Tournament. Hahnville earned a victory over Notre Dame, 31-28 and 25-23 in a very back-and-forth battle. The Tigers were defeated by Northshore, 25-15, 25-18; Chapelle, 25-18, 25-12; and Mandeville, 25-9, 25-12.
The Tigers showed resiliency in the Notre Dame win, LeBoeuf said.
“We had set point, then they had set point multiple times,” LeBoeuf said of the first set of that match. “We kept working and stayed focused until we were able to get the win.”
Two players who the Tigers are excited about, both in the present and for the future, are sophomores Ava Hogan and Sophia Hotard, the Tigers’ two setters.
“They’re doing a good job distributing the ball and making good choices. For being sophomores and managing our court, they’re doing a good job,” said LeBoeuf.
Hollingsworth made 19 kills and 10 digs in the Central Lafourche win. Amber Thompson, Alaina Thompson and Marih Myles each added four. Romero made 19 digs.
