Destrehan routs H.L. Bourgeois, awaits playoff draw

Malachi Dabney of Destrehan

Destrehan shook off a loss to Zachary last week to finish the regular season strong – and in the process, it secured an unbeaten district record.

The Fighting Wildcats nailed down a dominant 49-0 victory at H.L. Bourgeois Friday night. Earning Destrehan a third straight outright district championship. Destrehan has lost just one district game in Marcus Scott’s tenure since he arrived as head coach in 2026. DHS has either won outright or tied for the district lead in seven straight years.

Malachi Dabney scored two touchdowns on Friday to help pace the Destrehan offense. Aushai Smith and Jaylin Ash connected for a touchdown. Denham Ellsworth rushed for another.

Scott said that aside from the win, Destrehan’s chief goal Friday was to play at a high level to enter the playoffs with the proper momentum.

“We focused on some personal goals that we set for ourselves,” Scott said. “To go out and try to execute. We wanted to get better tonight … especially with teenagers, there can be distractions at times, and it was important for us to play to the expectations we have for ourselves and not to let that slip here right before the playoffs. I was pleased with the effort overall tonight.”

Scott said that winning district is among the first goals the Wildcats set out for each season.

“It starts with your district. You want to come out and take care of your district schedule as best as you can. It sets you up for the postseason. I’ve been proud of the kids through the years and our assistant coaches … it’s pretty special. Now we’re looking forward to seeing who we get to compete against in the playoffs,” Scott said.

Scott said that initial projections indicate that while Destrehan could finish anywhere from 4th to 6th in power points in Division I non-select, the likelihood is that the Wiidcats will finish just outside of the top 4 seed needed to earn a round one bye.

Still, seed 5 or 6 means at minimum Destrehan would host in Round 1 and then once again if it advances to Round 2.
