15-year-old booked with attempted murder
St. Charles Sheriff’s Office wasted little time making arrests in connection with two robberies that took place early last week at the Capital One Bank in Destrehan, both of which involved the brandishing of a firearm. David Isaac, 19, and a 15-year-old juvenile accomplice were booked on Sept. 13, only two days after the second crime took place. Isaac, a resident of 244 Meadows Drive, is charged with two counts of armed robbery and being principal to attempted first-degree murder, while the juvenile was charged with attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm, and two counts of armed robbery.
Both of the robberies centered on the ATM located at the Capital One Bank on River Road, the first of which took place on Sept. 10. That night, at 10 p.m., a customer was using the ATM when he spotted two black males climbing over a fence next to the bank. When the victim noticed that one of the men had a gun, he left his ATM card and cash behind and fled the scene.
The very next night, another patron was using the same ATM when he was approached by a black male in a dark mask who held a firearm. The male then demanded that the victim give up his money, but the victim was able to push the suspect away and get into his vehicle. The juvenile allegedly shot at the victim as he was driving away. The victim was not injured.
In both robberies, the gunman had an accomplice who was lurking on the side of the bank near the rear of Popeyes. A dark alley between a fence that separates the two businesses provided cover for the suspected robbers.
“These robberies were becoming increasingly violent and Sheriff (Greg) Champagne said we needed to jump on it and we were very aggressive in order to make these arrests,” Parish Chief Deputy Joseph Cardella said. “We always take into account that someone who has a gun is prepared to use it.”
After the second robbery, Champagne sent an email to parish residents warning them against using the ATM after dark. Later that night, both suspects were in police custody.
“Due to some excellent detective work on the part of Detective. Joseph Lemoine, we have made two arrests as a result of the two robberies that occurred at the Capital One Bank in Destrehan,” Champagne wrote in an email. “Both individuals live near the bank as we suspected. The investigation is active and ongoing and could possibly result in more arrests.”
Isaac’s bond has been set at $1 million by Judge Emil St. Pierre, and the juvenile is being held at St. James Juvenile Facility.
