Parish libraries offer game days for kids and adults

Since the Nintendo Wii gaming system was introduced in 2006, it has quickly become one of the most popular game consoles for teenagers. The St. Charles Parish Library thinks that young people are not the only ones who can enjoy the Wii.

“At first we only had two Wii systems that went around to the different libraries,” said Layla Naquin, the teen program director at the East Regional library branch. “Now each branch has one. We’ve had them for about a year and a half now and we have a pretty good collection of games that go around between all the branches.”

Most branches offer a teen and “tween” Wii game night once a month, but East Regional also offers time for adults to play the Wii.

Every Wednesday morning, the library offers a time for adults to come and play games on the Wii.

“We have people that come every week, definitely,” Naquin said. “Sometimes we have up to 10 or 12 people.”

Naquin said the adults tend to concentrate more on the Wii Sports, which allows for team events such as bowling, and the Wii Fit, which has fitness events such as yoga and stretching.

The Wii has benefits over other gaming systems for both teens and adults, Naquin said.

“It’s more physical, especially with the Wii Sports. You have to be up and moving around. It’s not just sitting like a zombie in front of a TV,” she said.

In the future, Naquin hopes to have more participants on the adult Wii days and to get the younger people more interested in reaching a goal with the Wii.

“I’m trying to get (the kids) to play the Guitar Hero a lot because it’s kind of a skill you have to build up,” Naquin said. “I want to do a Guitar Hero tournament eventually.”
