Monsanto provides kids learning tools

Hurst Middle LaBranche Wetland Watchers has received $5,000 from the Monsanto Fund, a private foundation and the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company, to help support the Hurst Middle LaBranche Wetland Watchers, which is designed to educate students about the importance of wetland conservation.

The Hurst Middle LaBranche Wetland Watchers is a school-based service-learning project primarily sponsored by the Louisiana Lieutenant Governor’s Office.

“Monsanto has been a fantastic partner for the Wetland Watchers. Their involvement goes far beyond a monetary donation. I am always impressed and honored when I see the amount of Monsanto employees that volunteer their time to help our young people from the community have a better understanding of the importance of our surrounding wetlands,” said Barry Guillot, director of the Wetland Watchers.

This grant will enable these students to increase the amount of field research the students can participate in by providing then with a mobile student research station to collect data in the field.

Each year the Hurst Middle LaBranche Wetland Watchers brings over 1,200 fifth through eighth grade students on service trips to our adopted site in the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

Through education, service, and awareness, students lead a community effort for wetland conservation..

According to Lindsey Landry, HR generalist and community representative for Monsanto, “This has been a great opportunity for Monsanto. In addition to donating money to a worthy cause, our employees get to spend quality time with St. Charles Parish students and teach them about the importance of biotechnology.”
