“Bark at Bridge Park” to raise funds for new shelter

***Update: This event was rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 20, due to forecasted inclement weather.***

The population of St. Charles Parish is growing, and that means that the stray animal population is too.

In order to accommodate this rise in the animal population, the St. Charles Parish Humane Society and Animal Control are holding the first Bark at the Bridge Park event on Dec. 12 to raise money to fund the construction of a new animal shelter.

The event will be held at the West Bank Bridge Park in Luling on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Animal Control Director Angie Robert said that a new shelter is greatly needed.

“We need another shelter because we’re growing out of this one,” Robert said of the parish’s current animal shelter.

Robert said the event is aimed at raising money for the shelter, but that she really just wants the community to be informed about the shortage of space in the animal shelter.

“We want to try to get a new animal shelter and this is going to help us achieve that. Every dollar helps, but more than anything I’m looking for the awareness,” she said. “Any donations or money that we raise is great, but at this event we want to make the public aware that we want to build a new animal shelter.”

Robert also hopes to make this an annual event because she said there are not many events in the parish where people can bring their dogs to spend time with them and other pet owners.

“In the parish, we don’t have anywhere for someone to bring their animal to socialize. It’s a day you can spend with your animal,” she said. “I have high hopes that (this event) will be much bigger next year.”

There will be raffles at the event, including an autographed Hornets basketball and eight tickets to the Audubon Aquarium/Zoo. Breeze Café and Puppy Love Daycare will also have booths at the event.

There will be a booth where pets can get their picture taken with Santa and booths with holiday gifts for pet lovers.

Robert said that adoptions will be available at the event.

“If someone is looking for a pet, this gives them an opportunity to bring their current pets to introduce them to potential new ones,” she said.

To donate items or monetary donations, bring them to the St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter or mail to 13875 Frere St., Luling, LA 70070. If you are interested in renting a booth at the event, contact Ashley Champagne at 504-275-5932.
