St. Pierre says residents can return

Warns that they must take care of themselves and that wastewater is a concern

Parish President V.J. St. Pierre says that residents of St. Charles Parish can return home, and they need to be prepared for what they are coming home to.

St. Pierre says there is a limited availability of food, water, gas, ice and medicine. Also, Sheriff Greg Champagne will continue to keep his 8 p.m. curfew in place.

‘So, when you get here, don’t ride around the parish and sight-see,’ St. Pierre said. ‘You might get stopped by the Sheriff’s Office.’

St. Pierre also warned residents that the parish does not have a public shelter, and because of that, they will have to stay in their homes.

‘We  currently have about 1,100 of our residents in shelthers in northern shelters,’ St. Pierre said. ‘That’s why we keep them there because we don’t have any shelters here.’

The wastewater system is also a big concer right now. The parish’s main plants do have generator power, but the lift stations do not have power. Because of that, the parish is urging residents in the parish to use wastewater services sparingly.

The parish has  already received reports of systems backing up.

St. Pierre says that Entergy expects the parish to fully regain power in the next seven to 10 days.

‘Don’t bug the Entergy crews if you do come back it – they have a job to do,’ St. Pierre said. ‘Don’t tell them ‘why you’re here won’t you see about tying my house in. They don’t have time for that.’

Right now, parish is only available in about 10 percent of the homes.

‘If you can’t afford to stay where you’re at any longer, and I know its putting a lot of stress on families that don’t make a lot of money because you have to pay for a hotel and three meals a day, we are not going to turn you down,’ St. Pierre said. ‘However, please be aware that the conditions here in St. Charles will be primitive.’
