Sharing the wealth can be misleading

When a candidate starts espousing that he will spread the wealth around, beware. Most people earned their wealth by working for it. It is their’s. If they want to give some of it away to a deserving person who perhaps did not have as many opportunities to gain wealth, fine.

If he wants to give it to charities who help the sickly, and poor and needy, okay. And if he wants to keep some of it for future generations, still alright.

But for the government to take it away with higher taxation to distribute on its own terms, no way. It is exercising a system of socialism that has not worked as well as our free enterprise system and will not. Those countries that have tried it succeeded in bringing their people to a similar level of income but it is always a lower level than can be achieved without it. Indeed, many countries that have tried it, such as in Europe, have gone back to encourage more development in the private sector. And some, such as the communist countries, have suffered revolutions from citizens who did not want their governments to run their lives.

So when you hear a candidate say he wants to spread the wealth, he is saying he wants to take money away from some and redistribute it to others with the government deciding who gets it.

The government certainly has the right to tax its people in proportion to their income to pay for government services and help some people who cannot help themselves but not to redistribute the wealth. By taking it away from a person who went out and created a successful business and then deciding where his profits should go cannot produce a vibrant economy. And the returns of losing the initiatives and hard work of successful people in place of spreading the wealth is not worth it. Joe the plumber and other enterprising business people can spread it a lot better by hiring people to work in their growing businesses. That is the basis of  our economic success.

Remember, it’s your money they’re spreading the wealth with. And you can do a better job of that.
