Adopting a Haitian kid would be a great service

Now’s a good time to adopt children if one is so inclined. And adopting one from Haiti would help relieve a great humanitarian problem.

Seeing all those smiling young faces amidst such tragic circumstances would make anyone want to give them a break. They need it.

Haitians are nice, friendly people. They’ve had tough times in the past. And now they need a break.

So if you want a kid or two around the house, check it out. You will be doing a great service to mankind.

Football drama gets more complicated

Holy cow! If the Saints beat Brett Favre from neighboring Mississippi, who claims to have  been a Saints’ fan, in the Superdome Sunday, they will play New Orleanian Peyton Manning in the Superbowl in Miami. How mixed up can football get?

It seems that the Saints are on the mend and showed it with barely a rough spot Saturday. They will still have to outperform Minnesota, a team that exhibited near perfection in trouncing a Dallas team that beat the Saints.

If that’s not enough, they’ll have to face Peyton’s team which didn’t give up a game this year until after the Saints had lost their first. Getting to and winning a Superbowl, obviously, is a difficult task.

But the Who Dats are good enough to do it – – 34-24.

Maybe its time to kill the death penalty

The death penalty has become a rarity. Louisiana executed its first person in a long time last week.

This rarity is a good thing since many innocent people have been executed in the past because we are not perfect in determining guilt. And it is better to keep a guilty person alive than to execute an innocent one.

Can government really cut health care costs?

The Senate’s plans for health care will increase medical costs in the country, some Democrats say. But in the long run, they plead, cost-saving measures could factor in to reduce the annual increase in that health care.

When have cost-saving measures ever reduced the cost of government programs? The only instances of such cuts have been when programs were drastically reduced or eliminated entirely.

And whenever a government program gets into operation, that doesn’t usually happen.

Ex-Presidents unite

It’s enlightening to see two ex-presidents who belong to opposing political parties joining forces to help in emergencies such as that in Haiti at the present time. Ex-Presidents Bill Clinton and George  Bush (the father) are now doing that. It speaks well of our democracy despite the one-sidedness it provides with our two-party system.

Did U. S. really invade Haiti?

Meanwhile, Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez accused the United States of invading Haiti during the current emergency there. Yes, we marched right in after getting their permission. And we are usually the first people to so “invade” another country when they need our help.

If other countries were as benevolent as the United States by “invading” to relieve distress, this would be a wonderful world indeed, Hugo. It puts into practice to “Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.”
