Though Destrehan defeated visiting East St. John last Friday night, DHS coach Stephen Robicheaux says his team cannot afford to carry its performance from that game forward. There were too many penalties and other mistakes and though his Wildcats survived that night after falling behind in the fourth quarter before rallying to win in overtime, those mistakes simply must be cleaned up.
“Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy,” Robicheaux said. “Way too many mistakes on both sides of the ball. You certainly can’t afford to do that against a team like East St. John. We have to get to work and get better.”
This Friday night, Destrehan travels to face a high scoring Central Lafourche team in District 7-5A competition. The Trojans are 3-3 this season and 1-1 in district play after splitting games against East St. John (a 35-13 loss) and H.L. Bourgeois (a 43-34 win).
CLHS averages 32 points per game this season, something Robicheaux says starts with the fact the Trojans boast a stout offensive line that ranks with some of the best in the state.
“They’ve got one of the best offensive lines we’ve faced,” Robicheaux said. “They do a real good job moving the ball and putting up points. They’ve been held under 20 one time all season, against East St. John. It’s a good power offense that runs through that line and controls the ball. We’re going to have to make some plays on defense.”
Trojans quarterback Jacob Barker completed 8 of 10 attempts for 99 yards and three touchdowns last week in the team’s win over Bourgeois. David Robinson hauled in five receptions for 65 of those yards and scored two touchdowns.
Robinson is an especially dangerous weapon, Robicheaux said, a 6-foot-3 deep threat who the Trojans also get involved in the running and short passing game.
“They get the ball to him,” Robicheaux said. “They’ll put him in motion and get it to him as a runner, throw a shuffle pass to him … get it to him any way they can.”
Sophomore running back Deon Jenkins is another star for Central Lafourche that Robicheaux said presents a defense problems . He rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns last week.
“We have to make their backs run east and west,” Robicheaux said. “We’re not the biggest group up front, so that’s the challenge ahead of us.”
Defensively, the Trojans start six sophomores and have allowed 33 points per game.
“They give up some points, but they score some points,” Robicheaux said. “They play very hard defensively. We’ll have to control the line of scrimmage.”
