It was a happy bus ride back from Hahnville for Destrehan’s volleyball team last Thursday, says DHS coach Edward Borgstede.
The Wildcats captured a 25-22, 25-21, 10-25, 25-22, 15-9 district win on the road over their chief rival, moving to 8-1 in district play and 15-12 overall.
Destrehan’s win over Hahnville Oct. 3 was its first in six years, and now the Wildcats have taken another big step in the rebuilding of their volleyball program by sweeping the defending district champion Tigers.
“Oh man, they came apart,” Borgstede said. “Just to do it one time, then go into Hahnville, to be up 2-0, be that close and have it kinda gets away from you before you lock back in … it was a really happy bus ride home.”
Allie Carmichael had 19 assists for Destrehan. Jaz’myn Lewis had 10 kills and Korinne Kimble logged 26 digs and Isabelle Chaisson had 10 blocks.
Borgstede said the Wildcats played very well at the net, with Chaisson playing what he believed was her best match of the season.
“She had about eight kills as well, but her defense set the tone,” Borgstede said. “She was sliding around the net, blocking pin to pin. Her single blocking was really, really key for us.”
Hahnville made a furious comeback after falling behind two games to none, dominating the third game of the match and winning a close fourth to force a decisive fifth game.
Brianna Plaisance had 17 kills to lead Hahnville. Stephanie Oubre added 14 kills. Bailey Roux made 45 assists and served five aces. Oubre, Brianna Plaisance and Chelsea Plaisance each made 14 digs.
Perhaps indicative of how far his young team has come since the beginning of last season—his first with the team—was Borgstede’s confidence in his group going into that fifth showdown.
“When we get down to the wire like that, I usually feel pretty good about it,” he said. “It seems crazy … the electricity in the gym, the intensity, it makes everything so much better. And it was incredibly gratifying for the team to find a way to dig down and pull it out in the end.”
Destrehan sits at 19th in power points and knows it will be in the postseason after clinching a top two spot in its division.
Thursday night will be the team’s regular season finale as it hosts Denham Springs for its senior night.
