The Hahnville Tigers boys’ track team won their second meet in a row last Thursday night in the Rummel Classic, which was held at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park.
The Tigers were solidly in second place at the conclusion of the field events with 55 points, 3 points behind Holy Cross but 23 points ahead of Rummel. The Tigers were led by Hunter Perrin and Lamar Foster, with each taking first place in the shot put and high jump, respectively.
Adrien Young also contributed with a second place finish in the shot put, Logan Martindale took third in the javelin and Maury Hales scored a third place finish in the pole vault.
The Tigers knew they had a shot at catching Holy Cross on the track, but at the same time they were also going to have to fend off a very strong Rummel team.
The Tigers fell a little further behind in the first two events, but started turning it on in the third when Brandon Singleton delivered a first place finish in the 110 meter hurdles. Andre Carter followed that up with a second place finish in the 100 meter dash, Julian Turner took third in the 400 meter dash and Bryce Robinson and Mattray Nedd took first and third in the 800 meter run.
However, Robinson’s night was just beginning.
Robinson’s performance in the 3200 meter run can only be described as dominating as he set a new school record of 9:52.59, eclipsing the mark of 10:00.41 set by his twin brother, Beau, at last year’s regional meet. Beau was sitting in the stands nursing a sore hip, but should be back in action in a couple of weeks.
“I kept telling myself that I was going to break the ten minute mark this week,” Robinson said. “When the coaches were calling out my splits to me, I knew I had a chance at it and just kept pushing.”
By the time he had completed his eighth circuit around the track, Robinson had lapped everyone except for the second and third place finishers, and was 29 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
The Tigers only had to finish in fourth place or higher in the final event, the 4×400 relay, to win the meet and did better than that by finishing second to win the meet by 8 points.
