In 2015, Hahnville was taken to the limit by host Woodlawn before winning a tight game in the fourth quarter. But this time around, the Tigers wasted no time asserting their dominance.
Hahnville begins its season 1-0 with a decisive 41-20 victory over Woodlawn-Baton Rouge. HHS led 41-6 early in the fourth quarter before the Panthers scored two late touchdowns.
The start of the game was delayed more than an hour due to lightning.
Austin Perrin scored a rushing touchdown and connected with Anthony Williams for a touchdown pass to account for the first two HHS scores. Cade Miguez added a rushing touchdown to push Hahnville ahead 20-0 and the Tigers never looked back.
“We came out and handled what we had to do,” Williams said. “We’ve got a great O-line. They blocked really well tonight and that gives us the chance to do some great things. We need to just keep working hard at practice and keep grinding.”
Hahnville coach Nick Saltaformaggio said he believed the difference from last season’s game came down to the Tigers being improved from last year. That said, he cautioned there is much work yet to be done.
“I was disappointed we played sloppy,” he said. “We probably left 28 points out there. You can’t do that. You have to be able to finish drives with kicks … I’m glad we’re 1-0. I’m proud of my team. We got a win and it’s hard to win. But we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Williams set up the Tigers first touchdown, a Perrin keeper, with an explosive play before he hauled in a 20-yard touchdown reception to put the Tigers up 13-0. He added a 91-yard touchdown run later in the night.
“He is what he is. I’ve been saying it for the past year (that) he’s the best skill position player in the state. He showed it again tonight.”
Woodlawn was able to get little going against the Tigers defense. Saltaformaggio credited the defense with a gutty effort in the face of three key starters sidelined for the game in Hunter LeBlanc, Jamar Davis and Elgin Collins.
