Tigers pick up fourth-straight win, ready for Destrehan series

After dropping their first three district games, the Hahnville Tigers have rebounded to win four straight.

Hahnville is now 16-6 on the season and 4-3 in district, which has them tied for second place in District 6-5A with rival Destrehan. The Wildcats just happen to be Hahnville’s next opponent.

The Tigers began their win streak with a 2-1 win over St. Amant in a rain-shortened game before knocking off East St. John 9-3. While those wins were impressive, Hahnville officially got back on track with back-to-back wins against East Ascension. The Spartans beat the Tigers 4-2 in the first district game of the year, but Hahnville got their revenge in the doubleheader.

The Tigers blanked the Spartans 2-0 in the first game, then powered past East Ascension 4-1 on Tuesday.

Daniel Arnold picked up the win from the mound while senior Tyler Cooper gave Hahnville a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run double. The Tigers would pick up two more runs in the fifth for the 4-1 victory.

Hahnville head coach Kade Rogers said it appears his team has got their focus back.

“We had a chance to refocus and regroup after our first three district games and we are just playing better and performing well in the basic fundamentals,” he said. “We haven’t had any major changes such as moving around the lineup or changing the pitching rotation…we are just more focused and good things are happenings for us.”

This season, one of the major surprises for the Tigers has been the emergence of senior pitcher Arnold. Arnold, who is seeing his first varsity action this year is 5-1 on the season.

“He has been phenomenal,” Rogers said. “He has been a complete surprise, a diamond in the rough. He deserves everything that’s coming to him because he works his tail off and soaks up everything we tell him like a sponge.

“He is a competitor and he has brought out the best in a lot of our guys.”

On Thursday the Tigers begin a huge doubleheader with Destrehan. The Wildcats beat Hahnville 9-5 earlier this year in a very sloppy game on both sides.

“These games our huge just because they’re the next games on the schedule,” Rogers said. “We already have a game against them under our belt, so hopefully our guys will play much better this time around.”

And Rogers doesn’t want his team to make this game a bigger deal than it already is.

“It’s a rivalry game, but we just have to focus on it as just another game,” he said. “The guys can’t make too much of it.”

Hahnville will travel to Destrehan for a 4 p.m. game on April 7. They will then host Destrehan on April 9 at 2 p.m.
