On Dec. 23, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) re-opened hunting seasons closed since Dec. 18 due to flooding in southeast Louisiana.
However, LDWF will restrict the harvest of deer to bucks only, effective until further notice.
Deer harvest is being restricted to compensate for fawn mortality and decreased productivity that is expected to occur as a result of this flood event. The bucks only restriction will apply to all land within the affected area, including property enrolled in DMAP and LADT programs.
LDWF Secretary Robert Barham is rescinding the emergency closing declared Dec. 18. Barham had closed all hunting seasons, except waterfowl, in portions of southeast Louisiana due to flooding that posed a potential risk to the hunting public and to species that could have been subject to overharvest.
The affected area includes Elm Hall Wildlife Management Area and those portions of Louisiana south of I-10, west of I-310, north and west of Highway 90, east of Highway 70, and east of Highway 22.
This shall include portions of St. Mary, Assumption, Ascension, Lower St. Martin, Lafourche, Terrebonne, St. James, St. John and St. Charles parishes.
