St. Charles track team makes long ‘strides’ toward Junior Olympics

The St. Charles Striders are making headlines once again as they are scheduled to leave for the AAU Junior Olympics in Norfolk, Virginia on July 29 and return on August 6. When asked if this trip would be a welcome vacation, Coach Ulysses Frontha said, “It’s work for the coaches as usual. The kids are expected to do great in the Junior Olympics.” The AAU Junior Olympics showcases the cream of the crop of track athletes from around the United States. Divided into 15 regions, the top four kids of each region are invited to compete in the national track event.

Among some of the exceptional track team members expected to receive medals, is Darnell Harris. “Darnell set the regional record in the triple jump with Jarvis Harris coming in second. Both boys do great at the triple jump. I really do expect them to win medals at the national event,” said Coach Frontha.

“Shaquieda Wells does very well in the 400 triple jump. Of all the girls, she is expected to do very well in the Olympics,” said the head coach. The coach also said that he expects the 14 year old girls relay team to do well.

“Getting to nationals is doing well in itself. These kids have done very well just to qualify. But they want medals at the national event and that is exceptionally good,” said the coach.

“We are always looking for volunteers and donations to keep the Striders going. Recently, an organization donated several cases of athletic drinks for the kids. We don’t turn down anyone that wants to donate their time or money to the track team. Every little bit helps out,” concluded Coach Frontha.
