This week’s Off to College and Beyond Player of the Week is UCLA running back and Luling native Chris Markey who was the Bruins’ main offensive weapon in their Emerald Bowl loss to Florida State with 144 yards rushing on 19 carries to go along with 2 receptions.

Brown top target in Outback Bowl

Tennessee tight end and Destrehan native Chris Brown tied for the team lead in receptions with 7 for 66 yards in the Volunteers’ loss to Penn State in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Eugene leads SMU to wins

Southern Miss guard and DHS grad Amber Eugene led the Lady Golden Eagles with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and a block in the team’s victory over Centenary on Dec. 20. She also led the team with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist in their victory over East Carolina last Friday. She also led the team in rebounds with 12 in their victory over Houston on Dec. 28 (11 points, 4 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocks) and with 11 rebounds in their loss to Marshall on Sunday (11 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. She also had 5 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in the team’s victory over Central Florida on New Year’s Eve.

Ravens’ Landry gets key pick again

Baltimore Ravens’ safety and HHS grad Dawan Landry had his second consecutive week with an interception return of more than 30 yards as he picked off Ben Roethlisberger and returned it 36 yards in the Ravens’ victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Eve. He also had 2 tackles, a sack and 2 pass deflection in the game. On New Year’s Eve he had 5 tackles and a pass deflection in the team’s victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Landry gets INT in Sugar Bowl

LSU safety and HHS grad Laron Landry had an interception for 32 yards and led the team with 6 tackles in the Tigers’ victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl last Wednesday.

Reed picks off Big Ben

Baltimore Ravens’ safety and DHS grad Ed Reed victimized Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for a 37-yard interception, making it two picks for St. Charles Parish players (Dawan Landry was the other) against Big Ben in the Ravens’ victory over Pittsburgh on Christmas Eve. He also had 2 tackles and a pass deflection in the game. On New Year’s Eve, he had 4 tackles in the team’s victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Scifres perfect in season’s final week

San Diego Chargers’ punter and DHS grad Mike Scifres had all 3 of his punts downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line in the Chargers’ victory over the Arizona Cardinals on New Year’s Eve. None of the three punts were returned as he finished the game with a 42.7-yard average. He also had 10 punts for an average of 42.5 yards with 3 downed inside the 20 in the Chargers’ victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Christmas Eve.

Stewart shining for Gold Rush

Xavier guard and DHS grad Mark Stewart had 20 points, 2 rebounds and an assist in the Gold Rush’s loss to Tougaloo last Thursday. He also had 14 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and a rebound in the Gold Rush’s victory over Wiley on New Year’s Eve. On Saturday, he had 9 points, 4 steals and a block in the team’s loss to Mobile.
