On Sunday, the wind was still blowing 15 to 20 miles per hour out of the northwest.
John Brady and I knew that with the low water conditions, falling temperatures and the bright son that it was going to be hard to fish.
Heading out to our favorite spots in the Lake Salvador Management Area, we arrived at the Fence Canal around 1 p.m.
Without catching any fish for an hour, we moved on to fish several other canals.
The North Canal, the short canal leading to the Alligator Pond, 100 Bass Point, and the “L” Canal only to produced seven sac-a-laits and one bass.
At 5 p.m., we ended our fishing trip. All of our fish were caught on the red/white/chartreuse mini jig under a cork 14 to 18 inches deep.
Monday marked the 10th day since the second cold front passed through the state. The passage has left the area lakes with strong north and northwest winds, below average water temperatures in the 40 to 50 degree range, and low water marks in all canals.
Rising water temperatures make canals a prime spot for sac-a-laits, bass, bream and catfish to start spawning.
Maybe crabbing will be better
Keeping the bad weather conditions in mind, Gretchen McDonald, Janice Bracamontes and I headed to Lake Pontchartrain to try and catch a few crabs.
We went out to the man-made peninsula at the end of the road along the eastern end of the Bonnet Carre Spillway.
I had brought six drop nets and some string to set-up hand lines. After reaching the peninsula, we noticed a group of men fishing.
I thought it was going to be good.
The strong northwest wind had blown the water out of Lake Pontchartrain. The shoreline was 10 feet from the bulkhead. Normally, the area where we put out the nets is high and dry.
We baited some old lines but did not get a bite. While we were there, two fisheries agents showed up and checked our fishing licenses.
The men did not have the proper licenses and the agents issued them tickets.
Both officers were very cordial in doing their jobs. Fishermen must keep in mind Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas are salt-water lakes.
A fisherman must possess a basic and salt-water license.
We moved to an area past the Wetland Watchers Park and still did not catch any crabs.
Maybe the weather will cooperate in late March and early April.
