Star running back will reunite with cousin Jordan Jefferson
The New Orleans Saints 33-30 overtime win over the Washington Redskins dominated the sports headlines Sunday, but an important piece of recruiting news also broke this past weekend.
Hahnville halfback Alfred Blue, who is considered the top prep halfback prospect in the state of Louisiana, verbally committed to Les Miles and LSU.
After visiting the Baton Rouge campus last weekend, the 6-1 ½, 210-pound running back made his decision known to Miles. He was also thrilled to see that Frank Wilson, who had recruited him for the University of Tennessee, would be his new running backs coach at LSU.
“Coach Miles was very excited, he was happy for me that I made the choice now and he can’t wait for me to get up there,” Blue said.
Blue had offers from Colorado, Auburn, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and others, but he selected LSU over Ole Miss in the final stages of the recruiting process.
“It was a tough choice, but I thought LSU was the right choice for me and then to find out earlier in the week that Frank Wilson was coming to LSU also cleared up any doubt,” Blue said. “Coach Wilson is a great running backs coach. And I have a great relationship with him already. I told Coach Wilson that the only way he would coach me was if he was at LSU. So we joked about that, and then he told me today that I was the reason he took the job.”
The versatile halfback rushed for 1,607 yards and scored 29 touchdowns for Hahnville in 2009 and he also caught 14 passes for 189 yards and 3 scores as a receiver.
Blue will now be teamed up with his cousin, quarterback Jordan Jefferson, at LSU.
“Jordan and I grew up together and were on the same youth football team,” Blue said. “We won a championship in youth football and now we get to do it in college also.”
Having watched Blue for the last two seasons at Hahnville, I have always favorably compared the hard-charging runner to former Ole Miss and New Orleans Saints standout running back Deuce McAllister due to his size, quickness, running style and his excellent pass catching skills.
With running backs Charles Scott, Trindon Holliday and Keiland Williams all leaving LSU due to graduation, Blue has a strong chance to see playing time in 2010 for the Tigers.
