Girls Track
Season update: On March 23 and 24, the girls’ track team traveled to compete in the Nokia Sugar Bowl Classic, held at the Tad Gormley stadium. This invitational meet is a two-day event and is the largest high school track meet in the south. Over 100 boys and girls come from Louisiana and surrounding states travel to compete. Hahnville placed 3rd overall and had many athletes win in individual events.
Hot hands: Danielle Douglas, Keira Davis and Leanne Williams all placed in their events ranging from the 200-meter dash to throwing the shot put. Our girls really have it going on!
Sparkplug: Le’Shell Hamilton also had a winning weekend where she placed in her events and helped out by scoring some major team points.
What needs work: “We worked our butts off and gave it a team effort, but it was not as good as some of us had hoped,” says runner Le’Shell Hamilton. “But we did do our absolute best and that’s all we can ask for.”
Up next: The girls match up against track teams in the East Ascension Relays.
Boys Track
Season update: Separated, but not defeated the boys went on their own way to compete in the St. James Crawfish Relays over the weekend as well. The boys also had some high scorers and placed 2nd overall in the meet on March 23 and 24.
Hot hands: Senior Marcus Campell placed first in triple jump and Joshua Lee won in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Both athletes had personal best records over the weekend, not only to contribute to the teams overall success.
Sparkplug: Shaine Boyle placed 3rd in the 200-meter dash and was an inspiring leader on the field. Boyle felt that everyone’s performance was exceptional over the weekend, but what is at stakes is the district 5A track meet during the last weekend in April. “We had a rough start, like last year, but we always find a way to pick it up before district,” says Boyle.
Baseball
Season update: District play opened on March 24 against East St. John, and the Tigers had their second district game Tuesday, March 27 against West Jeff. Nothing can stop these boys now with one win under the belt. The boys came out swinging and defeated the Indians, 8-0, for the second district win.
Hot hands: Luke Savoie, senior and left fielder, has not only impacted the team with his solid defense, but also his great attitude on and off the field.
Sparkplug: Lyndon Eusea, right fielder, has shown great attitude on the field and his strong arm keeps the runners from advancing on the bases. He has shown great improvement for his senior year coming up.
What needs work: “When we play a team, we need to be able to execute quickly and not let them hang with us,” says Coach Kade Rogers. “That’s how simple mistakes come back to hurt us in the long run.”
Up next: The Tigers have gone through the first round of games in district, and are now in the final stretch for district championship. They will play East St. John on Saturday, April 7.
Girls Tennis
Season update: The Lady Tigers faced the Assumption Mustangs on their courts Wednesday, March 28. The final score of the match was 8-1, with Kelsey Soudelier winning the only match in double overtime. Assumption went into the match undefeated, and the Tigers were left in its wake.
Hot hands: Big time players of the match were Kayla Prestenback and Esther Gruwell after winning their doubles game. A great combination of strength and suave, the girls ruled their match.
Sparkplug: Another player that stood out was Whitney Weber, sophomore. Her work ethic at practice is paying off in her matches because her technique is flawless.
What needs work: “Working on getting a harder serve will really benefit my doubles game because it will be easier for my partner, Esther Gruwell, to volley at the net,” says Prestenback. These girls don’t lack confidence and they don’t lack any skill.
Boys Tennis
Season update: On Wednesday, March 28 the Tigers played Assumption High at the Monsanto courts. This was a pre-district game, and the boys were fine- tuning all tactics in preparation for the match against DHS on Thursday. The final score of the game was 9-3 in the Tiger’s favor.
Hot hands: Doubles partners, Raul Jain and Andrew Miller, have come out swinging in all ttheir games and have had a successful season so far. Best of luck during district matches guys!
Sparkplug: Allen Every won his previous singles match against Morgan City High and is anticipating high scores and hard serves in his up coming district games.
What needs work: Jain’s game has improved greatly, but feels his backhand could use a little work. Practice makes perfect, and that’s exactly what he intends to do.
Golf
Season update: In a match against Terrebonne, the Tigers played an excellent match. All players were at the top of their game and nothing could slow them down. All focus is for the upcoming tournament in Ruston that could mean some serious reviews from scouts or college coaches.
Hot hands: Andrew Noto is at an all-time high in his game. He is consistently shooting par or better on the green and has many college opportunities in his junior year.
Sparkplug: On the girls’ side, Allie Petit, younger sister of golf star Dustin Petit, is the number one golfer on the girls’ team. Allie is a veteran on the course after playing 2 years on the golf team and has a good short game.
What needs work: On the course the golfers need to keep focused on the game and not to let little distractions hinder their overall game.
Up next: On April 9 and 10 the HHS golf team will play in the St. Louis Classic.
Softball
Season update: Talk about a nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat, can’t-get-enough-action game the Lady Tigers played against East St. John on Tuesday, March 27. After 11 innings the Lady Tigers pulled through and defeated East St. John; 5-4.
Hot hands: The game was full of all-stars, but Megan Hamilton shone through them all when she tied up the game in the 7th inning, after the Lady Tigers were trailing for most of the game. That hit rallied the girls’ spirits and pulled them through the rest of the game.
Sparkplug: Also Tiffany Landry, left fielder, scored the winning run to end the nerve wrenching game. Her determination and drive gave her that extra push to get to home plate and put the Tigers ahead.
What needs work: Knowing that East St. John beat Destrehan, 3-0, the Lady Tigers knew they had a tough game ahead and that it wasn’t going to be a cupcake team. “In the beginning we weren’t playing to our potential, but we put up a great fight towards the end,” says senior Dara Fontenot.
