Ever a defense and running game enthusiast, Hahnville coach Nick Saltaformaggio smiled broadly as he stood at the center of a muddy, soggy field following his Tigers’ 30-0 victory at Patterson Friday night. “It’s the prettiest game I’ve had as head coach at Hahnville,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t think we completed a pass. It’s a thing of beauty.”
So is the Tigers 2-0 record.
Anthony Williams scored three times and Devonte Clark added another score for Hahnville, all on the ground. Hahnville rarely passed on the night, instead relentlessly pounding the run.
“The field was horrible. It’s nobody’s fault, you had four inches of rain before we played,” Saltaformaggio said. “It was good to see us run the football like that. That’s important as you go further along and the season starts to unfold. We were able to run it with a lot of diff people, not just Anthony and Devonte. Cade Miguez ran well. Termon Nash ran well. Those guys came in at end of the game and really did a nice job.”
One might expect a soggy field to hamper the speed game of the electric Williams, but one would be wrong. All three of Williams’ scoring runs came from distance.
Williams’ first score of the night, a touchdown run over 50 yards, pushed Hahnville ahead 7-0 with 3:49 left in the first quarter.
Hahnville then added to that lead early in the second quarter on a safety after the punt team pinned the Lumberjacks inside their own five.
A 2-yard Clark run capped Hahnville’s next drive with 6:10 left in the first half, giving HHS a 16-0 advantage.
Williams scored on his second long touchdown run of the night with 2:15 left in the half to give HHS a 23-0 lead.
The lone score of the second half came on a 20-yard Williams touchdown run with 2:15 left in the third quarter.
Through two weeks, the Tigers first team defense has allowed just six points—and those were scored with Hahnville leading 27-0 in week one.
“Our defense is playing really good,” Saltaformaggio said. “We defended a pretty explosive team last week (Woodlawn) and again this week. Those guys had some skill. We were able to keep the ball in front of us and make the field long. Our punt game was very good tonight, so that helped us tremendously.”
Hahnville has dominated thus far, but the next month will test the Tigers mettle as contenders: successive games with Riverside, Destrehan and St. Thomas More loom, starting with the Rebels next week.
