Hahnville over Ehret, Destrehan falls on last-second field goal

The Hahnville Tigers held off a second half charge by the John Ehret Patriots and grabbed their first victory of the season on Friday night. Running back Ahmad White ran for 143 yards on 27 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the team.

The game began with both teams capitalizing on each others’ miscues. The opening kickoff was fumbled by the Patriots and recovered by the Tigers’ Jake Noel, eventually leading to an easy two-yard touchdown run by White. Then on the Tigers’ next drive, they were the fumblers, allowing a 73-yard recovery for an Ehret touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.

The Tigers roared back with a 73-yard drive on their next possession culminating with an 11-yard touchdown run from Brown. But Ehret again struck back quickly, this time within 14 seconds on an 80-yard kickoff return to tie the game once again.

The rest of the first half belonged to the Tigers, however, who came back with a long drive from their own 34-yard line. This time Ensminger took it in himself from the one-yard line to put the Tigers ahead 21-14. Later in the second quarter, Ehret muffed a punt which was recovered by Tiger linebacker Brody Bourg at the Patriot 26. The Tigers were able to put three more points on the board on a 23-yard field goal by Austin Freeman before time expired to take a 24-14 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw both teams fight back and forth for yardage, but no one could break through until Ehret drove from their own five-yard line to cut the lead to 24-21 on a 22-yard run by Patriot quarterback Mike Alexander.

Hahnville then embarked on a hard fought drive that found running back Travis Faucheaux converting two third and short situations, and Ensminger ultimately found wide receiver Derek Howard in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown.

Ehret came back with a late touchdown, and tried an onside kick, but Faucheaux came through again with the recovery.

Hahnville begins the season on a high note, with a nail-biting victory. Ensminger finished 13 for 22 yards for 142 yards and a touchdown while Brown had nine receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, the Destrehan Wildcats fell to Helen Cox after the Cougars nailed a 31-yard field goal with four seconds left for the 13-12 win.

The game was extremely sloppy, with penalty flags raining down on the field throughout the contest. Helen Cox had four fumbles, losing one, while Destrehan had three fumbles and lost one.

The Cougars took an early lead on a 32-yard field goal in the first half, and stretched the advantage to 10-0 with a one-yard run by Rodrick Johnson.

It looked like the Wildcats would go into the half without a score, but with 25 seconds left, Rickey Jefferson caught a short pass from Taylor Dunn and turned it into a 62-yard touchdown.

But the half ended on a negative note as Destrehan’s extra-point attempt was no good.

Neither team managed to get on the board in the third, but the Wildcats stormed back in the fourth. Running back Kevin Smith scored on a three-yard run with 4:49 left in the game, but after another failed extra point, the Wildcats led 12-10.

That set the stage for the Cougars’ last-second win.
