Once again, the Hahnville offense proved too much for their opponent, as they routed Sarah Reed 56-0 behind five touchdown passes from junior quarterback Brian Ensminger.
But everything gets a little tougher on Friday when the Tigers host Lutcher, who boasts a pretty powerful offense of their own.
The Tigers were flawless in their execution on both sides of the ball last week, with Ensminger notching his touchdowns in only one half of action and running back Alfred Blue picking up 120 yards on the ground and 56 through the air. Blue also scored three times in the first 24 minutes. That kind of production leads head coach Lou Valdin to believe that his team looked even better against Reed than they did in their 42-0 dismantling of John Ehret.
“I was very pleased,” he said. “Our big thing is continuous improvement, and I think we were better the second week than we were the first week.”
And while the abundant talent is clear on both sides of the ball, Valdin said his team’s success has a lot to do with playing mistake-free football.
“We are not beating ourselves,” he said. “We have been good on ball security on offense, and on defense, we are getting turnovers and swarming to the football.”
Because the Tigers are getting turnovers while not giving up any of their own, Valdin has gotten the chance to see several younger players in action in the second half. This early in the season, he said he would rather get those inexperienced players time under the Friday night lights than have his starters tested for a full game.
“It’s always good to get a lot of guys playing time early because you hardly ever make it through the season without injuries,” he said. “Whenever we can get them playing time, we are going to take it.”
But it’s doubtful those younger players will see any action this week against Lutcher.
The Tigers will need their full compliment of starters to bring down a Lutcher squad that has looked extremely impressive so far this season. The Bulldogs cruised to a 33-14 win over Dutchtown to open the season, then blanked Scotlandville 28-0 for their second win.
In their first game, Lutcher quarterback Gavin Webster had 116 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and passed for 146 yards and a touchdown through the air.
In their second victory, Webster threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
“The No. 1 thing we have to do is keep him contained,” Valdin said. “Anytime he gets out of the pocked, bad things will happen to Hahnville. We want to take that outside game away and either make him beat us throwing it or running up the middle.”
Defensively, Valdin said Lutcher is a sound football team that doesn’t beat themselves by making mistakes.
“They also don’t give up the big play and they do a good job tackling,” he said.
But this game will be about one thing, offense.
“This game has two teams with great talent on offense and the key to the game will be who can control the clock by running the football and keeping the other team off the field,” Valdin said.
