The Hahnville Tigers cross country team placed 14th out of 41 teams at the LHSAA cross country 5A championships on Nov. 13.
The top 5 finishers for the team consisted of Beau and Bryce Robinson, Bailey Breaux, B.J. Hartman and Seth Champagne. Shawn Maher and Patrick Phelan finished in the sixth and seventh spots for the Tigers.
Top honors for the team championship went to West Monroe, followed by St. Paul’s and Jesuit. With only two seniors in the top 7 (Hartman and Champagne), the Tigers will have high expectations for next year as they attempt to break into the elite club of the top 10 teams in the state.
Individually, the dynamic duo of Beau and Bryce Robinson continued to create quite a buzz in the cross country community by placing eighth and ninth in Class 5A. This was quite an improvement from their 64th (Beau) and 114th (Bryce) place finish last year.
The twins took the lead right from the start and maintained that advantage until right before the 1-mile mark, where eventual state champion Neal Fitzpatrick took over and never looked back. The Robinson twins would fall out of the top 10 between the 1 and 2 mile mark, but between miles 2 and 3 they picked up the pace and passed several competitors to close out a top 10 finish in the 3-mile race. Beau finished one second ahead of his twin brother Bryce.
This year’s Class 5A race was one of the most competitive in recent memory, and the twins’ times of 15:38 and 15:39 is a glaring example of that. Although they were only good for a 8th and 9th place finish in 5A (total of 296 runners), the times would have been good enough for a state championship in every other class except for 2A. Their times were the 10th and 11th fastest times in the entire competition (a total of 1,183 runners).
After a few weeks off, a few select Tigers will begin training for the indoor track season, which begins after the Christmas break.
In the spring, outdoor track will begin as the Tigers look to return to form on a new track surface and once again host the Don Raymond relays.
