Hahnville fans get first glimpse of future during Saturday’s Burger Bowl

Intrasquad scrimmage begins at 10 a.m.

Hahnville High School football fans will get a chance to see new head coach Nick Saltaformaggio in action on Saturday as his Tigers battle it out in an intrasquad scrimmage known as the Burger Bowl.

The Burger Bowl was a practice Saltaformaggio started at East Jefferson High School in which the winners of the scrimmage are fed hamburgers while those who are defeated are given peanut butter sandwiches.

The bowl comes after the first two weeks of spring football practice.

Since taking over, Saltaformaggio’s focus has been on installing a new double slot option offense and a new defense. Not only will the Burger Bowl give his players a chance to familiarize themselves with the new schemes, but Saltaformaggio said it will also weed out those who do not have the necessary passion for the game.

“There are a lot of guys here on the football field, some are here just trying it. We have to get through that process and let us get to the kids that are going to be committed to football and want to be in that dome,” Saltaformaggio said.

A lot of Saltaformaggio’s efforts have been aimed toward instilling school pride in his players.

“We are going to develop our toughness and just our mindset that this is Hahnville. I told our kids our opportunity is great and we have to restore the ‘H.’ When you used to come here and you saw that ‘H’ in the middle of the field, you were just wanting to survive. I know we are are going to restore the ‘H,’” he said.

In addition to changes in the offensive and defensive schemes, the coaching staff will see changes as well.

Mike Silva, who has been offensive coordinator since 2006 and was a finalist for the head coaching position after former coach Lou Valdin’s departure, will coach the running backs. John Lambert, former offensive line coach and also a finalist for the head coaching position, will take over as offensive coordinator.

Lambert was formerly offensive coordinator for Hahnville from 1999 until 2006, including the school’s last state title in 2003.

Saltaformaggio will serve as defensive coordinator and last year’s defensive coordinator and former Destrehan High School head coach, Chris Stroud, will handle linebackers.

However, Saltaformaggio has said he intends for Stroud to take back the defensive reigns once he thoroughly learns the new scheme.

The Burger Bowl will take place at Tiger Stadium, located at 200 Tiger Drive in Boutte, on Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m.

Hahnville will also scrimmage Baton Rouge-based Scotlandville Magnet High School on Monday, May 13 at 5:30 p.m. That scrimmage will also be held at Hahnville.
