Although the Hahnville Tigers were the first on the board, the Dutchtown Griffins had the upper hand when the dust settled Friday night in Dutchtown.
The Tiger defense did what few teams could do this year, however. They held Griffin running back Effrem Reed and the Griffin offense scoreless for the first 20 minutes of play. And they are only the second team this season to hold the Griffins under 20 points.
The Tiger offense struck early after Dutchtown turned the ball over on downs on their first drive. But the Tigers were only able to come away with three points on an Austin Freman field goal.
On the Griffins’ next possession, the Tigers had a chance to take charge of the game. After recovering a Dutchtown fumble at their own 19-yard line, the Tigers drove down to the Griffin 20. A pass from quarterback Brian Ensminger found wide receiver Desvon Joseph at the five. But a jarring hit, knocked the ball loose and Dutchtown recovered.
After the two teams exchanged punts, Reed finally broke loose after being well contained in the first quarter and a half. He broke through the Tiger defensive line and dashed 85 yards for the first touchdown of the game, putting Dutchtown ahead 7-3.
The score held until the middle of the third quarter when Reed struck again, this time from 31 yards out to make the score 13-3 after the extra point was missed.
This time Hahnville responded quickly, mounting an 13-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off with a two-yard touchdown run from running back Ahmad White. After the Freman extra point, the Tigers were within three.
But the Tigers’ next drive would stall out at the Dutchtown 45-yard line, and the Griffins would run out the remainder of the clock to take the victory and improve to 8-0 on the season. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in district.
Hahnville will next host St. Amant this Friday at 7 p.m.

East St. John 49 Destrehan 14

The shocking resignation of Larry Dauterive was either going to stun East St. John or motivate them, and it turns out the Wildcats used it as motivation in their 49-14 blowout win over Destrehan Friday night.
East St. John scored on their opening possession and never looked back as they took advantage of an injured Destrehan defensive line and two major Wildcat turnovers to roll up 49 points in the first half.
ESJ took a 7-0 lead when star receiver D’haquille Williams made an astounding grab on a lofted Darion Monroe pass to the endzone less than one minute into the game. Williams had set up the play earlier by taking the opening kickoff 66 yards.
With 7:11 left in the first quarter, East St. John running back Andrew Taylor broke loose for a 35-yard run that stretched the lead to 14-0. A possession later, Monroe found a wide-open Darion Monroe for a 31-yard score that sent Destrehan reeling.
With the Wildcats down 21-0, they found themselves in the shadow of their own endzone. Destrehan quarterback Dillan Dent, who was under extreme pressure all night, then tried to make a play with his feet but got blasted in the chest, which caused a fumble. ESJ’s Davontae Johnson scooped up the ball and walked right into the endzone to put his team up 28-0 to end the first quarter.
Destrehan finally got on the board in the third when Kevin Smith, who has been injured for most of the season, broke straight through the line and flew 57 yards down the middle of the field.
But the Destrehan cheers didn’t last long.
ESJ’s Taylor scored his second touchdown of the night on a 36 yard run, then Monroe added a touchdown scramble of his own to stretch the advantage to 42-7.
Monroe’s touchdown had been set up by another Destrehan fumble.
Williams, who scored his teams first score, then scored their last by making another leaping grab on a 21-yard pass from Monroe.
The lone Wildcat bright spot in the second half was the team’s second touchdown, which came on a 44-yard run by Rickey Jefferson.
