Hahnville comes up short in double-overtime, Destrehan falls to Karr

Hahnville and Destrehan both suffered defeats on Friday night, with the Wildcats falling 38-24 to Karr and the Tigers coming up short 42-34 in a double-overtime thriller with Lutcher.

It’s hard to imagine that there will be a more exciting game played this year than Hahnville vs. Lutcher. Both the Tigers and the Bulldogs mustered plenty of offense and thrilled fans with spectacular defensive plays as well. But when all was said and done, it was Lutcher who withstood a late barrage from Hahnville to pick up the victory.

Both teams managed 14 points in the first half, but Lutcher quarterback Gavin Webster put his team up 21-14 with an 80-yard run in the third. The Tigers answered back later in the quarter with a 26-yard touchdown run by Alfred Blue, and then took a three point lead on a 30-yard field goal by Mike Aucoin in the fourth.

But Webster wasn’t done.

The shifty speedster rattled off another 80-yard touchdown run in the fourth, then rolled into the endzone on a 34-yard run on Lutcher’s next possession to put his team up 34-24.

Hahnville put the game into overdrive on their next two possessions, capping off one drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by Blue, then taking advantage off a stellar defensive effort to get the ball back with under a minute remaining in the game.

Thanks to two personal fouls by the Bulldogs, Hahnville was able to get in position for a 41-yard field goal with 2 seconds remaining. Safety/ kicker Brion James slammed the ball through the uprights as time expired to bring on overtime.

In the first overtime, Hahnville quarterback Brian Ensminger was picked off on second down, which seemed to seal the Tigers’ fate. However, the Hahnville defense kept Webster out of the endzone twice from the 1-yard line to send the game into double overtime.

While the Tigers may have stopped Webster in the first overtime, they had no answer for him in the second one. The Bulldog quarterback cruised in on an 8-yard run to put his team ahead by 6, then tossed a 2-point conversion to give Lutcher a 42-34 lead.

That’s how the game would stay as the Tigers were kept out of the endzone on their possession.

Meanwhile, Destrehan started slow offensively and could never quite catch up with Karr in their 38-24 loss.

Karr quarterback Munchie Legaux tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jarrell Bennett to kick off the scoring, then hit Travis Clark for a 20-yard touchdown in the second quarter to put his team up 12-0.

Destrehan would answer to end the second, with Marshall Charles scoring from 1-yard out to cut into the Karr lead 12-7.

The Wildcats scored on a 38-yard field goal to cut into the lead a little more in the third, but Legaux tossed another touchdown, then ran for one to give Karr a 26-10 lead.

Both teams would trade scores in the fourth, with Karr holding on for the victory.
