Destrehan celebrated its Homecoming in style.
Aushai Smith threw two of his three touchdown passes to Jaylan Ash as that duo paced the Wildcats – Destrehan opened District 7-5A play with a 43-7 victory over Central Lafourche at Fighting Wildcats Stadium Friday night.
Jordan Zeringue rushed for a 55-yard touchdown to open the scoring on a night Destrehan led 43-0 at halftime. Malachi Dabney rushed for a score as well. Cameron Florent scored on an interception return. Tony Crump scored on a reception.
Both of Smith’s touchdown passes to Ash were on deep passes – and there was almost a third, as Ash was brought down at the 1 on another long connection.
Florent’s touchdown put Destrehan up 29-0 in the second quarter. He deflected a pass by Central Lafourche’s Brock Babin into the air and caught it before rumbling in for the pick six.
Smith’s first touchdown pass to Ash came from 35 yards out and made it 14-0.
The next connection between the two was all the more impressive. Smith rolled to his right and fired to Ash, who got behind the defense, hauled in the pass and raced for the long score.
Destrehan moved to 3-1 with the win, and starts 1-0 in district play. Central Lafourche dropped to 2-2 overall, 0-1 in 7-5A.
